The focus of this timely and compelling program is the coveted, yet elusive goal of peace. The musical centerpiece of this poignant program, The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace by Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkins, was written to commemorate the victims of the Kosovo Crisis in 1999 and portrays both the horrors of war and the yearning for peace. In addition to elements of the traditional mass, this work includes words of Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Old Testament Psalms, the Islamic call to prayer, and the Sanskrit Mahabharata. In the last masterworks concert of the season, the Bach Choir and Orchestra, along with four guest soloists, are featured in this powerful and emotional performance.

Our fall concert will take you on an exciting musical journey, beginning with a rarely performed exuberant choral work, Regina coeli, K. 127, written by a youthful Mozart, and moving on to Beethoven's widely acclaimed Symphony No. 5 in c minor. Samuel Barber’s lushly textured work for soprano and orchestra, Knoxville: Summer of 1915, is based on the poem of James Agee which expresses a child’s feeling of wonder and loneliness. And finally, Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna is a work of serenity and hope. Wall Street Journal critic Terry Teachout described the work as “direct, heartfelt, and as sweetly austere as the luminous sound of church bells at night.” This is a perfect pandemic recovery program to bring joy, hope, and peace. Popular Bach Festival Society guest soloist soprano Mary Wilson joins the Bach Festival Choir and Orchestra.
