Winter Park, FL — The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park is pleased to present “Russian Choral Masterworks,” the final program of the 2006–07 season. The concerts, featuring the Bach Festival Choir and Orchestra, will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2007, at 8 pm and Sunday, April 29, 2007, at 3 pm in the Knowles Memorial Chapel of Rollins College.
“Russian Choral Masterworks” will feature the dynamic music of the 19th- and 20th-century Russian composers at their most powerful and poignant. “These concerts feature some of the most famous melodies in music, including the 1812 Overture and ‘Stranger in Paradise’ from the Polovtsian Dances,” notes Artistic Director, Dr. John Sinclair. Additionally, this program will feature the Easter Overture, which includes some of the great Russian themes of the Orthodox Church, and Prokofiev’s monumental suite from Sergei Eisenstein’s film, Alexander Nevsky.
In anticipation of the “Russian Choral Masterworks” concerts, and in partnership with the Bach Festival Society, the Enzian Theatre will be showing the classic Sergei Eisenstein film Alexander Nevsky on April 22, 2007, at 12:30 pm. Alexander Nevsky, made in 1938 during the Soviet Union’s conflict with Nazi Germany, has a deep political subtext. The film includes a variety of propaganda elements designed to strengthen the Soviet people’s resolve for victory over their hated enemies.
